(국제표준화기구 ) "ISO"는 약어가 아니다. 이 용어는 그리스어의 isos에 근원을 두고 파생된 말로서, "같다"는 의미인 "equal"의 뜻을 가지고 있는데, "iso-"라는 접두어에서 그 예를 찾아볼 수 있다 ("isometric"은 동일한 치수를 의미하며, "isonomy"는 모든 사람들은 권리가 같다는 것을 의미한다). ISO라는 이름은 "International Organization for Standardization"을 각 나라에서 이 기구의 이름을 나름대로 번역하면서 생길지도 모르는 여러 가지의 약어들의 과잉을 막기 위해, 전세계적으로 사용된다 (이를테면, 영어권에서는 약어를 IOS라고 쓰고, 프랑스에서는 Organisation internationale de normalisation의 약어로서 OIN 등으로 쓰는 것을 방지하기 위함이다). 그러므로, 어느 나라에서든 이 기구를 의미하는 약어는 항상 ISO로 쓰인다. |
